Planning a first aurora trip can feel overwhelming. This checklist covers everything that actually matters, in order, so you arrive prepared and give yourself the best chance.
Tick these off and you're set.
Before you book
- Choose a far-north, dark base like Ruka (~66°N)
- Plan at least 3 nights (≈92% chance of a clear aurora evening)
- Aim for the season: late Aug–early Apr; peak Oct, Dec, Jan, Mar
What to pack
- Thermal base layers (merino/synthetic, not cotton)
- Fleece mid-layer, windproof shell
- Wool socks, −30°C boots, mittens, hat, balaclava
- Camera or phone + tripod and spare batteries
Book the right tours
Reserve a guided aurora hunt (mobility beats waiting), and fill the days with husky, reindeer or Ranua.
On the night
- Check the forecast & cloud
- Get away from lights, face north
- Be patient — stay out 2–4 hours
- Lock camera focus to infinity
