What Is a Husky Safari Really Like?
A husky safari in Ruka is not a passive sightseeing ride — you are part of the team. After a warm welcome at the kennel and a safety briefing, you meet your dogs. Most safaris pair two guests to a sled: one drives, standing on the runners and working the brake, while the other rides wrapped in blankets in the sled itself. Halfway along the route, you swap.
The moment the brake lifts, the dogs surge forward. Within seconds the barking stops and everything goes quiet — huskies only make noise when they are waiting to run. What follows is a gliding, exhilarating ride through snow-laden spruce forest and across frozen mire, with your guide leading the lead sled and setting the pace.

What to Wear
Standing still on a sled in the Arctic wind, you feel the cold more than you expect — layering is everything:
- Base layer: merino wool or thermal synthetic, top and bottom
- Mid layer: fleece or a light down jacket
- Outer layer: most kennels provide a thermal overall, winter boots, mittens and a balaclava on top of your own clothes
- Extremities: wool socks, a warm hat, and thin liner gloves under the outer mittens so you can handle the sled
Insider tip: bring hand and toe warmers for January safaris, and keep your phone in an inside pocket close to your body — batteries drain fast at -20°C, and you will want it working when the huskies pose for photos.
Are the Dogs Well Treated?
It is a fair question, and one worth asking any operator directly. Working huskies are bred and trained to run; pulling a sled is a natural, joyful behaviour for them, which is why they bark with excitement at the start line and fall silent once they are moving. Responsible Ruka kennels limit run distances, rotate their teams so no dog is overworked, and provide veterinary care, warm shelter and a high-calorie winter diet.
Before you book, ask about kennel size, how often each dog runs, and their off-season care. A good operator will answer happily and often invites you to spend time with the dogs before and after your run.
