Finland is consistently ranked one of the safest and most peaceful countries in the world. In Ruka and Lapland, the main things to respect are the cold and the winter roads — not crime.

Here's an honest safety overview.

Crime & personal safety

Finland has very low crime and is regularly ranked among the safest countries globally. Ruka is a small, friendly resort where you can walk at night without worry. Basic common sense is all that's needed.

The real risk: the cold

The genuine hazard is the weather. Dress in proper layers, keep extremities covered, stay dry, and don't underestimate −25°C. See what to wear at −25°C. On tours we provide thermal gear.

Winter driving & wildlife

Roads can be icy; if you self-drive, use winter tyres, slow down and watch for reindeer on the road at dusk. Otherwise, tour transfers remove the worry entirely.

Emergency info

The EU emergency number is 112. Healthcare is excellent. Carry travel insurance with medical cover, and tell someone your plans if hiking alone.
