Every guest who emails us before their trip asks some version of the same question: "What KP number do I need?" It's the right instinct — but the KP index is only one piece of the forecast, and on its own it can be misleading. Here's what the number actually means, and how we really use it to plan aurora tours out of Ruka.
We've run nightly aurora tours from Ruka and Kuusamo for over 8 years, watching this data every evening. This is the plain-English version of what we actually look at — not the textbook definition.
What Is the KP Index, Exactly?
The KP index (short for "planetary K-index") is a number from 0 to 9 that measures how disturbed Earth's magnetic field is, based on readings from magnetometer stations around the world. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center publishes a new KP value every 3 hours. The higher the number, the stronger the geomagnetic storm — and generally, the further south the aurora becomes visible.
The catch: KP is a 3-hour average, not a live reading. A short, sharp burst of aurora activity can come and go inside that window without ever pushing the official KP number very high.
The KP Scale for Ruka (66°N)

The important takeaway: you do not need a dramatic storm to see the Northern Lights from Ruka. At 66°N, we sit well inside the auroral oval, so even a modest KP 2–4 night regularly produces a display worth the trip.

Why KP Alone Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
Two other numbers matter as much as, or more than, KP on any given night:
- Bz (the interplanetary magnetic field's north-south component): updated every minute. When Bz turns strongly negative (southward), it's often the clearest short-term signal that active aurora is about to appear — sometimes hours before KP catches up.
- Solar wind speed and density: faster, denser solar wind striking Earth's magnetosphere tends to produce brighter, faster-moving displays, even at a moderate KP value.
Then there's the factor no space weather number can control: cloud cover. Ruka and Kuusamo average over 200 clear aurora nights a year, among the best in Finnish Lapland, but we still track live cloud data every departure and reposition — sometimes up to 150km — to get guests under clear sky.
How We Use This Data to Plan Your Tour
Every afternoon before a tour, our guides check the 3-day KP forecast, the live Bz reading, and the cloud forecast for Ruka, Kuusamo, and the surrounding wilderness. If Bz is negative and skies are clearing anywhere within range, that shapes both our departure time and our destination for the night. This is why a guided tour consistently outperforms guessing from a hotel window: we're reading three data sources at once, not one.
Common KP Index Mistakes Travelers Make
The most common misunderstanding we hear is "the app said KP 1, so there's no point going out." At Ruka's latitude, that's often wrong — plenty of beautiful, camera-worthy nights happen at KP 1–2. The opposite mistake is waiting only for a KP 6+ "storm warning" alert; by the time a headline-grabbing storm is forecast, you may have already missed several perfectly good KP 2–4 nights earlier that week.
