March is the grand finale of the aurora season, and a surprisingly strong one. The spring equinox around 20 March produces the same geomagnetic boost as September, temperatures climb to a comfortable −5 to +2°C, and the snow is still deep and perfect for activities. Days are noticeably longer, so you get bright, active daytime adventures and dark, aurora-filled evenings.

Aurora odds in March
In March, Ruka (latitude ~66°N) sits directly under the auroral oval, so even a quiet KP 1–2 night can produce visible green light. The spring equinox around 20 march tips the odds further in your favour. Our overall rating for the month: ★★★★☆.

Cloud is the only real enemy of aurora hunting. Ruka and Kuusamo average over 200 clear aurora nights a year, and on cloudy nights we drive up to 150 km to find a clear window.
What to wear
Layer up: a merino or thermal base, a fleece mid-layer, and a windproof, waterproof outer shell. Add wool socks, insulated boots rated to −30°C, liner gloves under thick mittens, and a hat or balaclava. On our tours we also provide full thermal outerwear and boots.
How to see them
