By November, Ruka is deep into winter. Darkness stretches to 15–18 hours, the snowpack settles in for the season, and husky and snowmobile safaris begin. November sees more cloud than October, but the sheer length of the nights means more opportunities — if the sky clears at any point between mid-afternoon and dawn, the aurora can appear.

Aurora odds in November
In November, Ruka (latitude ~66°N) sits directly under the auroral oval, so even a quiet KP 1–2 night can produce visible green light. Polar night approaching tips the odds further in your favour. Our overall rating for the month: ★★★★☆.

Cloud is the only real enemy of aurora hunting. Ruka and Kuusamo average over 200 clear aurora nights a year, and on cloudy nights we drive up to 150 km to find a clear window.
What to wear
Layer up: a merino or thermal base, a fleece mid-layer, and a windproof, waterproof outer shell. Add wool socks, insulated boots rated to −30°C, liner gloves under thick mittens, and a hat or balaclava. On our tours we also provide full thermal outerwear and boots.
How to see them
