October is arguably the best all-round month to see the Northern Lights in Ruka. You get the geomagnetic boost from the recent autumn equinox, 13–15 hours of darkness, the first snowfalls dusting the forest, and skies that are statistically among the clearest of the season. Temperatures hover around freezing, so it is cold enough for snow but not yet the deep −20°C of January.

Aurora odds in October
In October, Ruka (latitude ~66°N) sits directly under the auroral oval, so even a quiet KP 1–2 night can produce visible green light. The tail of the equinox activity plus the first snows tips the odds further in your favour. Our overall rating for the month: ★★★★★.

Cloud is the only real enemy of aurora hunting. Ruka and Kuusamo average over 200 clear aurora nights a year, and on cloudy nights we drive up to 150 km to find a clear window.
What to wear
Layer up: a merino or thermal base, a fleece mid-layer, and a windproof, waterproof outer shell. Add wool socks, insulated boots rated to −30°C, liner gloves under thick mittens, and a hat or balaclava. On our tours we also provide full thermal outerwear and boots.
