September is one of the most underrated months for the aurora in Finland. The autumn equinox around 20 September triggers a well-documented spike in geomagnetic activity, and Ruka's skies are already dark for 10–13 hours a night. Autumn colours — the Finnish ruska — blanket the fells in gold and crimson, temperatures are a mild 0–8°C, and the lakes are still unfrozen, giving mirror-perfect aurora reflections.

Aurora odds in September

Cloud is the only real enemy of aurora hunting. Ruka and Kuusamo average over 200 clear aurora nights a year, and on cloudy nights we drive up to 150 km to find a clear window.
What to wear
Layer up: a merino or thermal base, a fleece mid-layer, and a windproof, waterproof outer shell. Add wool socks, insulated boots rated to −30°C, liner gloves under thick mittens, and a hat or balaclava. On our tours we also provide full thermal outerwear and boots.
