Ruka is one of the best places in Finland to see the Northern Lights as a family. Small group tours, warm transport and plenty of daytime magic make it easy — with a little planning.

Here's how to make an aurora trip work with children.

Keeping kids warm and happy

Warmth is everything. Layer children well (thermal base, fleece, warm outer, mittens, −30°C boots) and keep outings comfortable — our tours include warm transport, a campfire and hot berry juice so kids can warm up between displays.

Managing bedtimes

The aurora is most active around 9pm–1am, later than most kids' bedtimes. In December, though, darkness comes by mid-afternoon, so early-evening displays are possible — ideal for younger families.

Daytime adventures kids love

Fill the days with husky safaris, reindeer sleigh rides, the Ruka Coaster, and Ranua Wildlife Park to meet polar bears — then aurora hunt in the evening.

Booking a family tour

Our aurora tours have a minimum of 2 people and welcome children, in small groups with hotel pickup. Ask us about family-friendly timing when you book.
