The Northern Lights (aurora borealis) and Southern Lights (aurora australis) are the same phenomenon at opposite ends of the planet. But one is dramatically easier to see than the other.

Here's the difference — and why the north wins for travellers.

They're twins

Both auroras are caused by the same solar particles hitting the atmosphere near a magnetic pole. In fact, they often appear simultaneously and as near-mirror images of each other in the north and south.

Why the north is easier

The key difference is land. The northern auroral oval passes over Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Canada and Alaska — places with towns, hotels and tours. The southern oval mostly circles over open ocean and Antarctica, so there's almost nowhere to stand under it.

Where to see each

For the aurora australis you'd need Antarctica, southern New Zealand or Tasmania — and even then it's usually low on the horizon. For the aurora borealis, far-north spots like Ruka, Finland put you directly beneath the oval.
