On Ruka's doorstep, Oulanka National Park is a winter wonderland of snow-laden pine, frozen rapids and river gorges. In summer it's famous for the Karhunkierros hiking trail; in winter it becomes a silent, white paradise for snowshoeing.
Here's how to experience Oulanka in winter.
What to see in winter
The star is the Myllykoski rapids, half-frozen and framed by an old wooden mill and a swaying suspension bridge. Snow drapes the pines, animal tracks cross the trails, and the whole park is hushed under deep snow.
Snowshoeing the park
Marked winter routes let you snowshoe through the forest to the rapids and mill — a gentle 4–5 km outing that most fitness levels can manage. Our Oulanka snowshoeing tour includes pickup, snowshoes and a guide, finishing with hot drinks by the mill.
Getting there
Oulanka's Juuma/Myllykoski area is about 30 minutes from Ruka. There are car parks and marked trails; check conditions in deep winter.
Day and night
Snowshoe the frozen rapids by day, then chase the Northern Lights in the park's dark skies after sunset.
