- Darkness: deep night, ideally around magnetic midnight (9pm–1am)
- Clear sky: minimal cloud — the single biggest factor
- Geomagnetic activity: KP 1+ in Ruka; a southward Bz helps
- Low light pollution: away from resort and town lights
