The Sun runs on an ~11-year cycle of activity, and we're near the peak of Solar Cycle 25. That means more sunspots, more solar storms, and more frequent, brighter Northern Lights.
Here's why the next couple of winters are a golden window.
The 11-year rhythm
Every ~11 years the Sun swings from quiet (solar minimum) to active (solar maximum). More activity means more CMEs and stronger solar wind — and more aurora. Cycle 25 peaked around 2024–2025 and remains highly active.
Why 2026 is excellent
Activity stays elevated for a few years after the peak. Through 2026 and into 2027 we're still seeing frequent strong displays — some of the best aurora years in over a decade.
It still needs dark, clear skies
A strong cycle raises your odds, but you still need to be somewhere dark and clear. That's why far-north Ruka, with 200+ clear nights a year, is such a good base right now.
