Short answer: usually no. Ruka is a compact resort where most hotels, restaurants and slopes are within walking distance, and tours include pickup. But there are cases where a car helps.

Here's when you do and don't need one.

Why you usually don't

Ruka village is small and walkable — accommodation, restaurants, ski lifts and shops cluster together. Our aurora hunts and safaris include hotel pickup and drop-off, so you're covered for the main experiences without driving.

When a car helps

A car adds freedom if you want to self-drive to Oulanka, Riisitunturi or Korouoma on your own schedule, or do independent aurora hunting away from lights. Otherwise, transfers handle it.

Winter driving reality

If you do rent, be ready for snow and ice: winter tyres are mandatory and standard, days are dark, and reindeer wander onto roads at dusk. Drive slowly and cautiously.

Airport transfers

From Kuusamo Airport it's a 30-minute transfer to Ruka by bus, taxi or hotel shuttle — see how to get to Ruka.
