Ruka is a wonderful — and increasingly popular — Northern Lights destination for Indian travellers and families. Here's a practical guide covering the questions we hear most from guests from India.

From visas to vegetarian food.

Visa & flights

Indian citizens need a Schengen visa for Finland. Fly from Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru to Helsinki (via one hub or direct where available), then a short domestic flight to Kuusamo Airport (KAO), 30 minutes from Ruka. See how to get to Ruka.

Best time to visit

December and January bring maximum darkness and snow (peak festive season); October and March add the equinox aurora boost. See our best-time guide.

Vegetarian & Indian food

Vegetarian food is widely available in Finland, and many Ruka restaurants cater to dietary needs — just let them know. Bring some familiar snacks if you prefer. We can advise on options when you book.

Family-friendly & warm gear

Ruka is very family-friendly. We provide thermal outerwear and boots on tours, so you don't need to buy expensive Arctic gear at home. Pack thermal layers, mittens and a warm hat. See our tours.
