December is one of the strongest months of the year for the aurora in Ruka — not because there is more solar activity, but because there is so much darkness. Around the winter solstice the region gets under four hours of daylight, which means the Northern Lights can potentially appear for up to 19 hours a day. Whenever the sky is clear and geomagnetic activity picks up, your chances are excellent.

Even on the shortest days it is never fully dark around the clock — you get hours of soft blue and pink twilight that photographers adore. But plan your outdoor activities around the light, and keep your evenings free for the aurora.
The Christmas Atmosphere
There is nowhere quite like Finnish Lapland at Christmas. Ruka's ski village glows with lights, wood smoke drifts from cabin chimneys, and the whole landscape is buried in clean, deep snow. This is the true home of Santa Claus in the northern imagination, and families come from all over the world for the reindeer, the huskies and the storybook setting.
Plan ahead: Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the Ruka winter. Accommodation, glass igloos and activities sell out months in advance, so book early if you want to travel over the holidays.

What to Pack
December in Ruka is properly cold, so pack for warmth in layers:
- Base layer: merino wool or thermal synthetic, top and bottom
- Mid layer: fleece or a down jacket
- Outer layer: a windproof, waterproof jacket and trousers
- Extremities: wool socks, insulated boots, a warm hat, and liner gloves under thick mittens
